Have you ever moved with your dog? Some people do, and others don’t. I’m part of the group that has moved several times with my dog – sometimes across town, other times across the country.
It doesn’t matter how far you go, the stress of moving isn’t easy. It doesn’t just affect you, but also your dog. Your dog can see and sense the changes going on in the house, the furniture being moved or removed, the activity of strangers coming and going – he’s probably thinking, what the heck is going on – he doesn’t understand.
In late 2009, I moved from New Jersey to Orlando. Because I knew how stressful the activity was on me, it was important that I control my dog’s anxiety. I gave him extra attention and reassurances, his playtime with his friends remained as consistent as possible; his bed and toys remained in place and his feeding schedule did not deviate until we were ready to leave.
We both left an environment where we were comfortable and secure. The new place would offer the same comfort and security. It may take some time for your dog to get used to this new place he’ll call home, however, once his things and your belongings are in place, he’ll know.
It’s important to let him wander around your property (attended, of course) to get used to all the new visuals and scents. Take him for walks in the neighborhood and change your path periodically giving
him the means to find his way home, should by chance, he gets lost. Introduce him to your new neighbors and let them know where you live. It doesn’t take long for him to become acclimated to his new surroundings. The most important thing to remember is no matter where you go, your dog is happy to be with you and will find comfort with you during this transition.
