We’ve had a bunch of rain over the last few days and many people have commented to us that their dog isn’t interested in going out at all. It got me thinking – what is it about rain that dogs hate?
My dog Maxie loved to swim – could be in the water fetching toys all day and never really tire. But when it’s raining, she was reluctant to go out – you could see it on her face, in her eyes as if to say, “Do I have to, I don’t want to go out in this mom.”
Beau on the other hand, hates water – doesn’t like to swim and it takes real encouragement (like tossing treats in the bathtub) to bathe him. It’s not surprising that he would hate the rain. He would rather hold it all day until his eyes turned yellow, rather than go out in the weather. If I’m fortunate enough to get him to move, he will walk a few steps, put on the brakes, and begin to turn around. Sometimes, I can cajole him with treats and he’ll walk, like “dead man walking”, head down, very slow. Eventually he’ll relieve himself and quickly turn around toward home. He always looked forward to being dried off when he got back indoors as he would stand at the door, looking up at the towel knowing that he was going to get a nice rubdown.
Interestingly, both dogs loved the snow. It’s not as difficult getting them out when it’s snowing and they enjoy running, playing fetch, sitting and laying, doing anything in the white powder.
Maybe the answer is that they’re just like us. Do you like standing in the rain having the water beat on you, getting wet and cold – didn’t think so!!!
