Strengthening a Dog’s Core Muscles – Why Do This?

Why would you want to be concerned about your dog’s core muscles? Because dogs rely on their core muscles to control their body when jumping, turning, and running. Ensuring your dog’s core muscles are strong can reduce and prevent injuries. Whether you have a performance dog or a pet, core strength is essential.

Below is a video of Emma working out on our FitPAWS® canine conditioning equipment.  How does this strengthen a dog’s core muscles? It doesn’t look like Emma is doing much but 10 to 15 minutes of this type of exercise is strenuous. As she continuiously tries to balance on the unstable surface, her body will automatically react to the shifting movement, causing her to use different muscle groups simultaneously in order to remain upright, thereby strengthening those muscles. Ideally core conditioning should be done 3 to 4 times a week.
