Our Top Halloween Pet Safety Tips

Are you looking for ways to keep your pet safe this fall? The Packing District in-home pet care services team at Rocky’s Retreat shares some of our top Halloween pet safety tips with you today.

Do you want to know what’s even more scary than your neighbor’s Halloween decorations? Pet safety hazards! This is a topic that is worth your time year-round, but it can be helpful to get a refresher on certain pet safety tips around the holidays. Halloween and other holidays can be a very busy time of year, and it’s important to remember some ways you can keep Rover safe and healthy amid all of the events. Here are a few tips our team has selected to help you and your pup avoid any unnecessarily spooky situations this year.

Tip #1: Provide Your Dog With A Well-Balanced Nutritional Regimen

With all of the variety in dog food and treats, choosing what food is best for your pup can feel a little overwhelming. But a little helpful information can put you well on your way to mastering the art of canine nutrition.

It’s important to make sure that your dog has a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of water and healthy, high-quality dog food. Many dogs also benefit from taking supplements such as glucosamine, which helps them manage arthritis, and fish oil, which can help to regulate their immune system, slow cancer growth, and improve mental functioning. Make sure to check with your pet’s veterinarian if you are curious about canine supplements or nutrition and how they can help support your pet’s health and well-being.

Tip #2: Make Exercise A Fun Part Of Your Pet’s Daily Routine

Prioritizing regular exercise for your pet is one of the best ways to keep their muscles strong and can help you both avoid unnecessary visits to the veterinarian. Exercise doesn’t have to be anything drastic, and there are many ways to keep your dog active that are fun for both of you. The American Kennel Club shares that exercise requirements vary among dog breeds, but aiming to at least get some activity in every day reduces the likelihood of illness, and helps to reduce mental stress, anxiety, and boredom.

If your schedule is really hectic or if you would like your pet to get some extra outdoor time while you’re at work, Rocky’s Retreat now offers dog-walking services. Each of our walks last up to 30 minutes and can help your pup stay active and achieve a healthy amount of exercise each day.

Canine hydrotherapy at Rocky’s Retreat is another great way to work some more physical exercise into your dog’s routine. This form of aquatic therapy provides your dog with some amazing mental and physical benefits and is helpful for most types of dogs, including those that are aging or dealing with the symptoms of health conditions like arthritis, hip dysplasia, obesity, and more.

Tip #3: Invite A Pet Sitter From Rocky’s Retreat To Take Care Of Fido This Halloween

If you will be attending any Halloween parties, harvest festivals, or are taking your kids out for trick-or-treating this year, consider in-home pet sitting. No matter what your situation may be – The Packing District in-home pet care services at Rocky’s can help put your fears to rest.

Maybe you’ve been looking for a pet sitter to take your pup out for a walk once a day while you’re at work, or you have a vacation planned and will need overnight care. Whatever your pet care needs may be, we have expert pet sitters at Rocky’s Retreat who will provide your pet comfort and safety while you are away.

Tip #4: Only Feed Your Dog Healthy, Non-Toxic Food And Treats

They don’t call it “trick-or-treating” for nothing. All of the sugary sweets that are associated with Halloween are part of what makes it so much fun for many people. However, if you’re a pet owner, you need to keep your dog away from your candy stash and make sure they don’t have access to any other sort of sweet treats that they shouldn’t have.

Even though many of the ingredients found in certain foods aren’t healthy for people, they can be even more detrimental to the health of your dog. For example, many types of candy contain xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol. If your dog ingests xylitol, possible side effects include low blood-pressure, liver failure, seizures, or even death. Other harmful candies include those containing certain types of nuts – such as macadamia nuts and cashews – raisins, and chocolate, all of which are unsafe or toxic for dogs. Many types of foods that are acceptable for human consumption present health risks for canines, so make sure to keep any of these sweets far out of their reach, and remind any guests that Rover needs to stick to his own treats to avoid any harmful side effects. Tip #5: Prioritize Pet Safety During Holiday Events

Halloween is a holiday that comes with a lot of celebrations, parties, and crowds. If you are hosting one of these parties, things can get pretty noisy, and there may be a lot of distractions around. If your pet isn’t safely kept in another room or in a kennel during these events, they might just make a run for the door if they aren’t being watched closely.

Your pet’s levels of anxiety or stress also come into play during events such as these. If you have a pet who gets very anxious around new people or loud noises, you may benefit from signing them up for a session of doggy-daycare or overnight boarding with us.

If you’re worried your pet will feel sad for missing out on the festivities – there’s no need! Our doggy-daycare and overnight boarding services include lots of love from our staff, socialization through playtime with other dogs, exercise, and more. It’s pretty much like sending Fido on a luxury vacation of his very own.
